Guyana Wildlife and Kaieteur Trek

Itinerary

D1: Sunday  - Arrival - Arrive in Guyana- South America's only English speaking country. Guyana is a nature lover’s gem, waiting to be discovered. It is known as the land of many waters and the giants of the world; among them, the mighty Essequibo river, Giant Arapaima fish, largest Harpy eagle, longest Anaconda, giant Otters. You are privately transferred to your hotel for overnight.

D2: Monday  - Georgetown walking city tour.  It is not difficult to see why Georgetown is called the ‘Garden City of the Caribbean’. Its wide tree lined avenues and beautiful architecture, ranging from Gothic to Elizabethan, are evident as you drive along Main Street, High streets and Brickdam. St Georges Cathedral-the tallest freestanding wooden building in the world- picturesque City hall, the Victorian Law courts, Stabroek Market, Parliament building, St Andrew’s Kirk- oldest church at 135 years old, are many of the fine examples of old colonial architecture. Our visit also includes the Umana Yana, Prime Minister’s Residence, and State House, the Walter Museum with its display of Amerindian artifacts, the national museum, botanical gardens and zoo. We will take you to a local breezy (depends on weather) restaurant by the ocean to enjoy one of our many local dishes. Return to hotel. (Breakfast and lunch provided)


D3: Tuesday  -overland bus to Madhia- After breakfast the next morning you will be escorted to your bus for the journey to the gold mining town of Madhia, passing through Linden [mining town] along a dusty road to Mabura Hills and Konawaruk.  The short drive from Madhia to Pamela landing stage on the Potaro River will be your last comfort travel for a few days.  By boat you travel upstream to near Amatuk Falls where you can take a quick dip in refreshing river water accompanied by the sound of water gushing down the Falls.  Overnight in jungle camp. (Lunch and Dinner provided).


D4: Wednesday -Trekking-After breakfast you change to another boat above the Falls to continue your river journey through the Kaieteur Gorge whose steep slopes rise either side 2,000ft, some with bare rock faces resembling ancient temples.  This will bring you to your next campsite at Waratuk Falls.  (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided)


D5: Thursday -Trekking- After an early breakfast, you begin the last leg of the journey: an eight-hour hike from Waratuk Falls to Tukiet and an enchanting overnight camp, with refreshing swimming in the Potaro River and a spectacular view of the Kaieteur Gorge.  (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided). 


D6: Friday - Trekking & arrival at Kaieteur falls- From Tukiet you climb to the top of Kaieteur Falls, a four hour hike which winds through the mountains and mountain streams [more dips] to the final stage known as "OH MY GOD" because of its steep ascent.  On reaching the top all is forgotten as you catch your first glimpse of the mighty Kaieteur Falls.  At dusk clouds of thousands of swifts gather before plunging into the water of the Falls to their rocky nesting sites behind the wall of water.  You sleep at Kaieteur Guest House.  (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided). 


D7:  Saturday - At Kaieteur Falls/To Georgetown- Early morning mist gives way to a memorable view of the Falls from Johnson View.  Golden frogs can be seen in giant bromeliads where they spends their entire life from tadpole to maturity.  In the afternoon you fly back to Georgetown and transfer to your hotel.  (Breakfast and lunch included).

D8-12: Wednesday - Shell Beach, Turtles & Amerindians:-< Shell Beach (which has been designated for Protected Area Status) is famous for its turtle population including the Leatherback - the world's largest, Green Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtles. The turtles nesting on the beach are relatively few but are of remarkable diversity. First we travel overland and stay a rainforest resort located on 60 acres of fertile land on the Northwest section of Guyana. It is at the mouth of the Akawinni Creek of the Pomeroon River in the heart of the Amerindian Reservation district. From there we will spend 2 nights (1 on your way in and the other on the way out) enjoying any of the following activities: Nature walks led by local Amerindians, visit to places of cultural interest such as an Amerindian settlement; enjoy canoeing on the Pomeroon River. Then, we embark on a boat trip to shell beach where we spend a few days witnessing nature unfold before our eyes. On our journey we will also encounter wildlife and learn more about the traditions of the Caribs and Arawaks natives of the area. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided).    


D13: Thursday  – Transfer to Iwokrama:- Arrival at Iwokrama (overnight bus). Transfer to Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve. The Centre was established to promote the conservation, sustainable and equitable utilization of tropical rainforest in a manner that leads to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits. One the first day you will be free to explore the trails around the field station with an Iwokrama Ranger. After dinner go in search of caiman and other nocturnal wildlife. Return to the Field Station.  (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided). 


D14-15 Friday-Saturday  - Iwokrama and Satellite Camp: - TThe Iwokrama forest is rapidly gaining in international reputation for its healthy jaguar population that seem not to be troubled by the appearance of curious humans. Today you will take a leisurely stroll up Turtle Mountain. Its summit is 935ft (approx. 360m). It takes an hour to walk up the mountain, but the effort is more than worth it for the breathtaking views over the forest canopy when you get there. The rest of the afternoon will be spent setting up camp and exploring the area near to the Turtle Mountain Satellite Camp. This is a well-known area for its jaguar population. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided).  


D16-18 Sunday – Savannah Experience:-Transfer to the savannahs in search of big games. This trip will take about 4 hours driving. On arrival, you will observe other wildlife. You will also overnight in the camp. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided). 


 D 20: Thursday – Overland to Georgetown: - Free day at leisure. Overnight. (Breakfast provided). 

D21: Friday - Return flight home:- Transfer to airport for your return flight.
